Who’s the boss in NYC? Not the mayor. Sure as heck not the citizens.
Of the services customarily provided by cities to their citizens, one that is very amenable to privatization is sanitation. There are dozens of examples from cities of all sizes demonstrating the huge savings to be had by letting private companies pick up the trash and clean the streets.
Privatized city sanitation relieves taxpayers of rigged overtime pay, hyper-generous pensions, platinum-plated health plans and in the cases of many cities, the bully tactics of public employee unions.
This comes to mind as we examine the debacle following the blizzard that whacked New York City just after Christmas. It is increasingly clear that unionized sanitation workers, upset by Mayor Bloomberg’s attempts to rein in spending, deliberately slow-walked snow removal in order to show the mayor who’s really in charge. And make no mistake. In New York and elsewhere, it is the employees who are in charge.
This was the first skirmish in a war that is brewing between taxpayers and that richly cosseted cohort of American workers that, despite performances such as this one in New York, persist in calling themselves “public servants.”
Put on your helmets. There is much worse to come.
Doggone those public servants, police, fire, military. Fire them all !
I grew up in a Union household and know, all too well, the tactics and low down tricks they use to make a point. “Featherbedding”, “slowdowns” and “blue flu” come to mind right off the top of my head. This was a Maritime Union and busted heads happened at times.
I have no doubt that the progressive Left has taken the Unions to new heights and has cost America it’s manufacturing base and is ruining municipal, state and federal agencies. New York City and State did not learn a thing during the Cloward & Piven years…but, you can bet your sweet grannies drawers that the left and the unions did…and now they are flexing muscle to make their point.
It is clear that the unions are running things across the country now, thanks to the left. It is past time to disban the unions. Their time has come and gone where they were for the little guy. All they care about now is gaining more and more power, which this has clearly shown. The union could care less about people inside or outside their walls. This was proven when several deaths were associated with their refusal to plow the streets of snow so emergency responders could get to people in peril. SOMEONE should be held accountable for this…the union’s perhaps?!
I want to know how can a mayor be able to break as many rules as he likes and when the tax payers even look like their getting out of line the are socked with whopping fines and threaten every which way how can this be, are we still in slavery just in 2011?
We keep voting these people in and they are messing up worst than i would and i am not politician. HELP THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK AND STOP TAKING AND GIVE THEM THE SERVICES THEY NEED AND STOP TAXING AND FINING US TO DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!
