Civil society under siege.
The Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle is well known. By day, its numerous coffeehouses are credited with making Seattle the center of the universe in the coffee world and the cradle of Starbucks. By night Capitol Hill is an entertainment mecca.
It’s also the center of Seattle’s counterculture. That makes it prime real estate for the types of demonstrations and civil unrest that erupted in the wake of the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd.
That pot has now boiled over.
After a week of intense fighting between the Seattle Police – with the help of the National Guard – and a violent coalition of Black Lives Matter and Antifa activists, the city’s leadership has consigned the Capitol Hill neighborhood to anarchy.
As the confrontation intensified, Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan ordered police to abandon the department’s East Precinct station in order to “deescalate the situation.” Activists immediately poured in. Several Seattle police officers are in the hospital.
With the police gone, the activists secured effective control of the six square-block area. They quickly rearranged police barriers to establish a secure perimeter, set up a rudimentary government, establish a paramilitary security force and declare the area to be the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.” A sign on one of the perimeter barriers reads, “You are now leaving the USA.”
The city government is completely acquiescent. Kshama Sawant, a member of the city council, called the takeover a “victory” against “the militarized police force of the political establishment and the capitalist state.”
Washington state governor Jay Inslee, when asked about the situation said, “I have heard nothing about that.”
Businesses and property owners inside the neighborhood perimeter are being extorted for cash in order to avoid having their properties destroyed. The police will not answer calls within the zone.
The activists have a long list of demands that includes the outright abolishment of the Seattle Police Department and retrials for all racial minorities serving prison time. They pledge to maintain control of the zone until their demands are met, setting the stage for a protracted siege.
Nothing from prior riots and civil unrest prepares the mind for this. In the 1960s, local governments at least fought back. Here in 2020, the elected polity of one of the prettiest cities in the country stands complicit in the breakdown of the social order. In an area encompassing dozens of businesses and thousands of residents, a parallel government has been established and the duly elected government is making no effort to stop it. The tax dollars that businesses and residents pay for police protection mean nothing.
Seattle, like a lot of major American cities, has been run by Democrats for 50 years. But for most of that time, even Democrats asserted basic dominion over the social order. But not anymore. Seattle’s über-left political class has now capitulated to the forces of chaos and anarchy.
If you’re not worried that a newly emboldened Antifa, et.al. won’t try to replicate their success in other Democrat-run cities, you’re not paying attention.
Paul, as always, you have nailed it. Thank goodness for your editorials. We need more people like you. I am proud to call you a friend. My belief has always been that George Soros and his money are behind all this….paid rioters, created virus, paid news people, and paid politicians. He vowed to destroy American, and there are enough naive folks who buy into this. I am thankful to live in Smith County. Keep up the good work sir.
The occupation of Capitol Hill in Seattle is nothing more than a criminal enterprise that has been allowed to occur by the feckless and cowardly progressive state and local governments. The “protection racket” that these thugs are perpetrating against the merchants is the same as the mafia use to intimidate for money…..aka EXTORTION!! Unless someone has the onions to go in there and “spank” these spoiled children, this same tactic will be used in other progressive cities. The major concern of the citizens should not be that their radical politicians will abolish the police force, but that the police will decide that the job is not worth the grief. Do not be surprised to see a huge exodus of existing peace officers, and a lack of applicants who want to make law enforcement a career. Like Jim, I am thankful to live in Smith County, where I understand onions are plentiful.
While I don’t relish the idea,it is time to quit playing with this trash –they should use whatever force necessary to terminate this situation.
As a retired high school and college teacher of Political Science and Economics, plus being a Vietnam veteran, I am totally disgusted with these socialists and anti-civil society folks that are followers of people like Soros. The Governor and Mayor ought to be removed and then allow the National Guard to clean out the criminals. Force must be used on these radicals.
Excellent sir!
Simply put, Black Lives Matter and Antifa are marxist communist anarchist groups who HATE every American citizen of goodwill whether they be white or black or any other skin color. These two political anarchists entities despise the United States of America and everything our great Constitutional Republic stands for… Life, Liberty, Freedom, Justice, and Capitalism, all of which are cherished by 325 million plus American citizens of goodwill since our founding. We are still, “ONE nation under God.” And ALL lives matter.
Great men and women from all walks of life and ethnicities, have fought and died for our Flag, and the precious ideals that it represents. Yes, The Star-Spangles Banner i.e. our Flag is the visible embodiment of our Constitution and The Declaration of Independence which for over 200 years are that which binds us all together as a nation of “We The People.”
Let us all REJECT the lie of any political group, or any political party that would divide us, and instead come together working for the good of all. The best way, in my humble opinion, to achieve this is to vote Republican, voting for four more years of leadership by voting for President Donald J. Trump.
There is another group involved known as RAM, Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement. They are employing the strategy of the Syrian Kurds; who are Marxists. The book, “Burn Down the American Plantation the Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement” that outlines their current actions and goals. This trifecta of radical groups have come together to maximize their effect along with those in the municipalities that support them.
This silly sideshow will likely fizzle-out before stormtroopers mobilize. These nutjobs are only human. They’ll need to eat/sleep/go-potty.
Holland is right; these escapees from their parents’ basement do not have the backbone to do anything that is not under a mob shield. Take away their food, stuffed animal, and potty, and they will come out of their bunkers with hands over their heads. This B.S. is just the party atmosphere of Woodstock, but anarchists playing the music.
I disagree with the opinion that this hostile takeover is BS. It seems the leaders of the city have given their blessings to the actions, leaving the citizens at the mercy of these thugs. Others cities are surely watching. Nashville, TN definitely IS, and the governor has warned of a much different response to a takeover attempt. Lawless actions such as these should NEVER be accepted or encouraged in the USA! There is nothing peaceful about them!!
Amen! Once you start feeding the animals they only want more and show up in greater numbers. Protesting is one thing; but an insurrection is completely unacceptable and must be stopped. With that said, a very big part of me wants those areas to get what they ask for. But that is totally and unequivocally a bad attitude on my part for those who are innocent and did not ask or want this Marxist revolt.
My apologies for not making my sentiments clear. The BS was a description of the useful idiots who are involved, not the very serious and unlawful anarchy! If the progressive politicians would allow a determined use of force by the police, this “occupation” would be over quickly!
It’s like Occupy Wall Street.
Let ‘em make their statement.
Then clean up after ‘em.
Why fuss?
“Why fuss?” HC, please elaborate in DETAIL how YOU would suggest that the city and state elected officials should handle these misguided “nutjobs”, if that is what you think they are. What is your suggestion to the local residents that are trapped inside the “occupied” group of many city blocks that are now within the property boundaries of the innocent sounding “autonomous zone” as captured by its new rulers?
How should the current laws be changed to accommodate this behavior (in order to minimize damage to the local population and property) with the goal NOT to infuriate this new breed of protesters into expanding their influence, if YOU think that is possible or even desirable?
I don’t.
Anyone who makes a mess like this, must be made to clean up the debris afterwards. These youngsters need to be made use brooms, shovels, dust pans to literally “clean up” all the trash, poop, and whatever else is left behind after their little communist party is over. Public service to their community is never a bad idea or exercise. End this despicable civic abomination.
The link below offers some of the greatest insight into the current situation, and was offered shortly after the largest division of the population of the country at the time – the Civil War.
